HOW TO SIZE an outdoor lantern

Selecting the right-sized outdoor lantern can sometimes pose a challenge. Follow these sizing guidelines for a fit that's just right.

The height of an outdoor lantern should be based on the height of the door:

DON'T UNDERSIZE YOUR LANTERNS:

As a rule of thumb, your lanterns should appear to be about half the size of your door from 50' away.

FOR 1 LANTERN:

If you place a lantern on only one side of the door, it should measure one-third the height of the door. The center of the bulb should rest 66" above the threshold of the door.

FOR 2 LANTERNS:

When two lanterns are used, they should each measure approximately one-fourth the height of the door. The center of the bulb should rest 66" above the threshold of the door.

TIP: In either case, if you choose a fixture with a long tail or top scroll, pay attention to the overall bulk of the fixture.

TIP: When in doubt, always go larger.

The number one question I get asked: How low should my chandelier hang over my dining table?

The number two question I get asked: What should the diameter my chandelier be over my dinging table?

A good place to start is with the bottom of the chandelier at 5 feet off the floor or 30 to 36 inches above your table. However this is a very subject. As table size, room size and the feel of your chandelier may effect how low you want your chandelier. More delicate chandeliers might be lower, while heavier/bulkier chandeliers might be higher.
Have your electrician hold it up or hang it up BEFORE wiring (before they cut the wires) and review it within your space.
As for the width (which can also be subjective) Choose a chandelier that is 6" narrower than the smallest width of the dining table.

Chandelier - A multi-arm, decorative, often ornate ceiling light fixture that holds a number of bulbs.

Sconces - An indoor decorative lighting fixture with a flat side to be hung on a wall, that holds candles or lights.

Bath Lights / Vanity Lighting - Lighting typically installed above a mirror in which light bulbs form a bar or row.

Flush Mounts and Semi-Flush Mounts - Attach to the ceiling with or without a gap between the fixture and ceiling. Flush mounts are tight to the ceiling and Semi-Flush Mounts are usually have a short extension to the light fixture.

Pendant Lighting - An ornamental hanging fixture with no multiple arms.

There are three basic types of lighting - general lighting, task lighting and accent lighting, A good lighting plan will incorporate all three. Use the basics to create layers of light to provide illumination, make tasks easier and highlight key design features.

General Lighting, also known as ambient lighting provides an area with overall illumination. General lighting enables you to see and walk around safely by radiating a comfortable level of brightness. It can be accomplished with chandeliers , ceiling or wall-mounted fixtures, recessed or track lights, and with lanternsoutside your home. Think of general lighting as a basic form of lighting to replace sunlight. General lighting is fundamental to a lighting plan and as such should be your first consideration when designing.

Task lighting is focused points of light that help you perform specific tasks such as reading, sewing, cooking, homework, hobbies, games, or balancing your checkbook. It can be provided by recessed and track lighting, pendant lighting , and portable lamps . Task lighting needs to be bright enough to prevent eyestrain and should be free of distracting glare and shadows.

Accent Lighting highlights design features in and around your home and adds drama to a room by creating visual interest. As part of your decorating plan, accent lighting is generally used to spotlight paintings, houseplants, sculpture, and other prized possessions, or to highlight the texture of a wall, drapery or outdoor landscaping. Accent lighting requires at least three times as much light on the focal point as the general lighting around it. This usually is provided by track, recessed, cabinet or wall-mounted fixtures.

Planning the lighting for your home can run the gamut from simply deciding to purchase a new reading lamp to completely redesigning the lighting plan for your entire home and yard. Whatever the complexity of your current need, we know that sometimes the choices and information can be overwhelming. Kichler Lighting wants to help you create the look you want as easily as possible.

Different types of lighting can create different moods, add beauty to your home and of course help prevent you from bumping into the furniture. And changing your lighting can also be a very cost effective way to update, change the style of, or remodel your home.

Some of the information you will find in this section can be found in most places on the web where they talk about lighting. It is just the nature of a “Basics” section. However, we are sure you will find a nugget or two of information here that just isn’t available anywhere else.
When planning your lighting here are the first things you need to think about:

Know your budget. There is a lot of lighting out there. In fact, there is a lot of lighting on this site alone and it can be easy to get carried away.

Know your style and taste. Take a look around your home. What décor makes you the most comfortable? Look through magazines and find pictures of rooms that appeal to you. If possible, have color chips or fabric samples ready for when you make your lighting purchase.

The Basics of Lighting
Know what the area is used for. You will need different lighting for doing homework or food preparation then you will need for dining, entertaining or just passing through. Some areas will serve multiple purposes so you may need different types of lighting in a single location.
Where’s the Electricity? This is especially important for new construction or large remodeling jobs.

Know where the outlets and electrical boxes are. The less re-wiring you have to do the better.
How big is it? Take a look at the size of the room. If you have a 10’ ceiling in your dining room, a 3 tier 21 light chandelier won’t work for you. Likewise, if you have a double sink vanity in the bathroom with 3 mirrors an 18” bath bar won’t be adequate.

Where does the sun shine? That’s right! Natural light plays a large role in the type of lighting you need. Look at where the windows are and how much light they let in. Pay attention to large plants or trees that may partially block the sun’s natural rays. It is always important to consider both daytime and nighttime lighting when choosing lights for your room or home.
